What is Hand Therapy?

Hand Therapy specifically addresses problems which involve the upper extremities (arm, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, fingers) through specialized evaluation and treatment. Hand Therapy and Hand Therapists are involved when preventative, non-operative, or conservative treatment is recommended as well as in postoperative rehabilitation.
 



 

  Who is a candidate for Hand Therapy?  
 
Hand therapists frequently work with:

  • cumulative trauma disorders such as tennis or golfer's elbow or repetitive
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • arthritis
  • fractures, lacerations, tendon and nerve injuries
  • wound management
  • scar management
  • pain management (chronic and acute)
  • custom splint fabrication
  • training in the activities of daily living
  • rehabilitation after traumatic injury; work hardening programs
     



 

 

 
Who are Certified Hand Therapists?
 
A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) may be an Occupational or Physical Therapist who specializes in the rehabilitation of patients whose conditions affect the hand or upper extremity. Highly specialized, CHTs have advanced certification and are required to maintain excellence through continuing education courses.

Hand Therapy services are offered at all HealthONE Rehabilitation Centers.
